NEW - Veterans Day Commemoration (Daryl Brown) -
Just a reminder to devote a minimum of one hour on Wednesday, November 11th, to the United States Constitution and the Declaration of Independence in observance of Veterans Day. Unfortunately, given the current pandemic and hybrid environment, the usual option of a school-wide assembly is not practical. I am sure that you will come up with a creative way for students in the classroom and those participating in Distance Learning to honor veterans.
The applicable S.C. Law is below for your review.
SECTION 59‑29‑120. Study of United States Constitution requisite for graduation; attendance at veteran’s activities.
(B) On November eleventh of each year which is a legal holiday in this State as provided by Section 53‑5‑10 to commemorate and honor veterans, all elementary, middle, and high schools in this State if they are open, shall devote at least one hour of the school day in either classroom instruction or at a student body assembly program to study the United States Constitution and the Declaration of Independence. If any such school is not open on November eleventh, this instruction or assembly program must be given on the day the school is open immediately preceding November eleventh.
(C) On November eleventh of each year, schools may permit students to attend activities to commemorate and honor veterans that are held at locations within their respective counties. The parent of a student seeking to be excused pursuant to this subsection shall provide prior written consent to the appropriate school personnel. Attendance at such activities shall count as a part of the instructional day for purposes of Section 59‑1‑440.

ELA {Ashley Johnson}:
- October 19 - 30th: K-2 DIBELS8 Progress Monitoring of students in all MOY tested areas. Students who receive BURST instruction will only need to be progress monitored in the areas that they have not been PM by BURST. Our goal is to get at least one data point for all MOY tested areas:
- Kindergarten: PSF, NWF, WRF
- 1st Grade: PSF, NWF, WRF, ORF
- 2nd Grade: NWF, ORF
- The Center for Collaborative Classroom has released their MOY and EOY remote learning guidance for Being A Writer and Caring School Community. These documents will be very beneficial as you continue planning for a hybrid instructional model.
- BAW Training Opportunity for New Teachers {Keri Barthalomew}: I would like to extend an invitation to any Horry Educator who has not had the opportunity to participate in our Best Practices in Writing workshop. This might include new teachers to the district who did not participate in this 2019 offering. Below, you will see logistical information as well as registration links. This is a complimentary offering and we have 25-40 seats available.

- ELA Collection 1: It seems unbelievable to be saying this, but there are only 3 weeks left in your work with Collection 1. It is time to begin thinking about having conversations about:
- How to effectively use class time to complete the Collection 1 post-knowledge check so that you do not love valuable instructional time {Example Ideas: Use workstation time on in-person days to complete; break the post-knowledge check apart and give pieces as exit slips over multiple days, etc.}
- Make a plan for collecting and analyzing Collection 1 data to drive future small group instruction.
- Begin revising last year's Collection 2 map to ensure selected paired texts are providing a well-rounded experience with the mastery standards, and
- Begin planning for formative assessment moments within Collection 2 to capture personal response moments during the collection work.
- Digital Content: Please remember that our digital content programs are a great way to supplement and support students, but these programs do not need to be a stress point for teachers, students, or parents at this time. Our goal is to follow our digital content guidelines as close as possible, but if it is not possible for a certain grade level to follow these guidelines only having 2 live days, then talk as a team and determine how close to expectations you can get. 2 grade levels that this will most likely affect are Kindergarten and 3rd grade. Since Lexia and Achieve3000 are brand new programs to these students, it is very possible that it will take a little bit longer than normal to get students comfortable enough with the programs to use them as intended. Encourage teachers to keep working with students to build independence, but again, please don't let digital content become an unnecessary burden for them at this time.

PALS Assessments (Tammy Martin) -
The PALS assessment window closes on 10/30/2020. Please complete the assessment as soon as possible due to the limited amount of time we have students in school for face-to-face administration. PALS data is already being compiled for schools that have finished testing and will be shared with principals beginning next week.
Ignite by Hatch (Tammy Martin) -
CD teachers can share the Parent Log-Out Instructions in English or Spanish with parents so families know how to log out of the Ignite app before sending the iPad back to school. Please let me know if any parents report not knowing their username/password. We can prompt the Ignite system to resend an invitation and/or password to parents as needed.
