2023 HCS Summer Scholars Program Faculty Applications Due February 1st (Contact: Pam Gravitte, GT Coordinator) -
The Summer Scholars Program held at Ten Oaks Middle School provides academic enrichment opportunities to students in grades 3-11. The Program is not meant to supplant the regular school curriculum; rather, it recognizes the importance of allowing high achieving young people the chance to explore critical thinking and learning through creative Exploration Modules in the areas of science, math, performing arts and/or humanities.
We will still offer courses that students have grown to love and expect each year, but we are also interested in offering something different for our students. We are looking for innovative modules with technology application, creativity, and high interest. Exploration Modules should support state/national/discipline standards and be differentiated for bright students providing them opportunities for stretching and growing. Keep in mind that the main target audience for this program are elementary and middle school students.
WHO: This program is designed for students who are achieving at high academic levels.
WHEN: Teacher Half-Day Workday on June 8th
• Students may enroll for one or two Exploration Modules per week.
• Enrollment will be on a first-come, first-served basis. 15 students per class.
The Exploration Modules support standards in the areas of math, English/language arts, science, social studies, foreign language, visual or performing arts, or any combination of these disciplines. The Exploration Modules should be rigorous and challenging and provide a unique approach to teaching and learning. The instructional strategies should match the needs of the high-achieving learner and be based on an appropriate model. Modules should be innovative, creative, high interest, and include technology application when possible.
PERSONNEL:
Current HCS teachers are eligible to apply for the Summer Scholars Program. Teachers new to the program will be interviewed and selected by the GT Coordinator. All applications will consist of teacher/candidate demographic information and a general description for the proposed Exploration Modules(s). The syllabus must include:
1. Name of the Exploration Modules
2. Discipline
3. Description of Proposed Exploration Modules
4. Grade level
5. Required materials
Teachers are encouraged to select an area of their discipline that intrigues them and interests students and to develop a four-day Exploration Module around this area.
