Grow Your Own Initiative (Human Resources, SCDE) -
The state of SC is offering a new “Grow Your Own” alternative pathway to certification. The GYO program allows paraprofessionals employed with HCS to obtain teaching certification at no cost. Paraprofessionals who are interested in teaching can continue to work and take online classes to complete the program by 2027. Classes would begin in the Fall of 2023 and would be expected to be completed by Spring of 2027. We anticipate certification programs for all areas of initial certification including special education.
If you have paraprofessionals that you would like to recommend for this program, please have a conversation with them to determine if they would be interested. They will most likely have questions that we can answer at a later time, but for now, we just need to determine interest. When you speak with them, please ask what areas of certification interest them and their highest level of education.
After speaking with the para, if you would like to recommend them for consideration, please complete the google form below. You will enter their name, school, certification interest, and highest level of education. There will be a selection process, this google form is just an interest and does not require a commitment at this time. It simply allows us to gauge interest and determine next steps as a district.
