NEW - SC Metric Week October 10 – 16, 2021, Governor’s Proclamation -
Dear District Leaders and/or Math & Science Coordinators: [PLEASE SHARE]
Celebrating Metric Week in South Carolina 2021 (October 10-16) is a very important opportunity for K-12 students. An announcement at each school in your district and encouragement of metric system activities during and after Metric Week would be an excellent idea. (Some easy-to-use ideas on celebrating Metric Week are available online at: www.artsandsciences.sc.edu/cse (Click on Programs then Metric) or http://scacademysci.org (click on South Carolina Academy of Science Founded 1924) then click on Metric, top of page.
We want you to know the opportunities offered to Teachers and Students by the National Institute of Science & Technology (NIST) Metric Program. https://www.nist.gov/metric. Also, USMA Site usma.org is a good site for information.
As you know, companies (which will eventually employ many of our students) are gradually producing products to metric system standards. This means that the jobs of tomorrow will require employees to be able to use metric units.
Please click on the hyperlinks below to access the following:
(1) Cover Letter, (2) SC Metric Proclamation, (3) National Institute of Standards & Technology (NIST) (Opportunity for teachers & students) and (4) Metric Activities for Students in South Carolina pages
The South Carolina Metric Proclamation is distributed to all public and private schools in South Carolina and is recommended and approved by the South Carolina Academy of Science (SCAS), coordinated with the Office of Metric Programs at the National Institute of Standards & Technology (NIST), part of the U.S Department of Commerce and the Center for Science Education at USC. Special thanks go to Governor Henry McMaster for his support of this worthwhile endeavor.
Sincerely,
Don Jordan, UofSC

Learning Specialists:
ELA (Ashley Johnson)
Rotation 2 Science Kit Training will be held on October 13 at the District Office and October 19 at the Science Center. We cancelled 4th grade Light and Sound on October 13 due to no registrations.
Book Study applicants will receive an email from Kim Friday afternoon. All applicants- those selected and not selected will receive an email. We were trying to include people from as many schools and grade levels as possible, so if you had multiple applicants from one school, you may find not everyone was accepted, depending on the district-wide interest from that level. Books will be sent via interoffice mail as soon as I receive them at the District Office.
